28 Jul
Summary
- Nearly 4 lakh plastic containers collected in three days.
- Pilot Dengue Prevention League targets mosquito breeding sources.
- Corporation plans larger scale initiative from August.

In a significant drive against dengue, the Coimbatore Corporation's pilot Dengue Prevention League (DPL) has successfully collected nearly four lakh discarded plastic containers and other water-holding waste in its initial three days. This inter-zone competition focuses on eliminating mosquito breeding sources through rigorous source reduction.
The week-long program is actively preventing dengue ahead of the monsoon season. Domestic Breeding Checkers identify potential breeding sites, and conservancy workers remove the waste. The initiative's encouraging response has led officials to consider a larger, scaled-up launch from August, with awards planned for top-performing zones.
This pilot aims to strengthen source reduction, a vital dengue prevention method. By clearing stagnant water containers, the program directly combats mosquito breeding and reduces dengue transmission risks. The collected recyclable plastic waste will be sold, with proceeds benefiting the sanitation workers involved.
