Coffee Worsens Chronic Pain, Fish Offers Relief
7 Dec
Summary
- Coffee consumption linked to increased pain sensitivity.
- Oily fish diet demonstrated a significant pain reduction.
- Research involved over 200 healthy individuals aged 60+.

New findings suggest that daily coffee consumption might intensify chronic pain symptoms, especially among the elderly. The research, conducted by scientists at Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun, Poland, tracked 205 healthy individuals over 60 for two years.
The study revealed a concerning link between increased coffee intake and heightened pain perception. Participants who drank more coffee reported a significant surge in pain intensity. This suggests caffeine may make nerve cells more sensitive to pain signals over time.
In contrast, incorporating oily fish into the diet appears to offer considerable pain relief. Individuals with a fish-heavy diet experienced up to a 44 percent drop in pain levels. Researchers attribute this to anti-inflammatory compounds present in fish, highlighting a potential dietary strategy for managing chronic pain.
