15 Apr
Summary
- Two to three cups of coffee daily may benefit mental health.
- Drinking five or more cups daily increases mental disorder risk.
- Study analyzed over 460,000 participants from UK Biobank.
- J-shaped pattern observed between coffee intake and mental health.

A recent study suggests that moderate coffee consumption may offer protective benefits for mental health. Research indicates that drinking two to three cups of coffee daily is associated with a reduced risk of mental health disorders.
The study, involving over 460,000 participants from the UK Biobank, observed a J-shaped relationship between coffee intake and mental health outcomes. This pattern means that neither very low nor excessively high coffee consumption yielded the same positive associations as moderate intake.
Interestingly, the link between coffee and mood disorders appeared stronger in men. The authors note that compounds in coffee, such as caffeine and chlorogenic acid, possess anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties that could contribute to these mental health benefits.
However, the study also found that consuming five or more cups of coffee daily was linked to a higher risk of mental disorders. This finding underscores the importance of moderation in coffee intake for potential mental well-being advantages.
