Cockermouth GP Surgery Shows Progress
25 Jul
Summary
- Cockermouth's only GP surgery has shown improvements.
- Inspectors previously found breaches in safety and management.
- A report will be discussed by the council's scrutiny committee.

Castlegate and Derwent Surgery, Cockermouth's sole GP practice, has demonstrated notable progress in overcoming significant challenges. Following a critical inspection in February by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), which resulted in the lowest possible rating and identified breaches in regulations concerning safe care, service management, safeguarding, and complaint resolution, subsequent reports indicate positive changes.
A recent report from the North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board highlights improvements in key areas. These advancements include better complaints handling, enhanced incident oversight, more effective safeguarding actions, and progress in access recovery and triage arrangements. Governance documentation has also been strengthened.
Representatives from the surgery are expected to present these findings to the Labour-led Cumberland Council's health overview and scrutiny committee on Thursday. The committee is anticipated to endorse continued support and oversight to ensure these improvements are sustained. This follows concerns previously raised by the Labour MP for Penrith and Solway, Markus Campbell-Savours, regarding residents' issues.
