23 Mar
Summary
- Prescribed co-codamol for whiplash led to severe addiction.
- Daily use escalated to 12 strong pills, risking fatal overdose.
- Family intervention averted losing job, kids, and potentially life.

A woman in her 50s from outside Glasgow, Scotland, experienced a devastating spiral into co-codamol addiction following a prescription for whiplash sustained on a fairground ride. Initially taking six pills daily for pain, the medication soon became a crutch for emotional distress, including a broken marriage and a difficult new relationship.
Over two years, her prescription intake grew to 12 strong pills nightly, a dose she admits was an overdose, providing a feeling of being high. This severe dependence led to panic if she ran out, causing her to beg friends for pills. Her addiction impacted her work at a hospital and severely affected her memory and concentration.
The situation reached a crisis point when she began missing school pick-ups for her daughter, prompting concerned calls from the school. Her children became aware of her addiction, causing further distress. It was a family member's threat to involve social services that finally spurred her to seek help.
After going cold turkey in January 2020, she endured severe withdrawal symptoms. Now clean for six years and working as a spiritual life coach, she reflects on how close she came to losing her family and her life. She warns that prescription drugs are too accessible and can lead to more dangerous substances, emphasizing the importance of seeking professional help rather than quitting abruptly.
