Cialis Linked to Glaucoma Risk in Men
17 Aug
Summary
- Cialis use correlates with increased glaucoma risk.
- Men taking tadalafil showed higher eye pressure.
- Regular eye check-ups advised for users.
Men taking tadalafil, the active ingredient in Cialis, to treat urinary incontinence may face a higher risk of developing glaucoma. A new study published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology analyzed data from nearly 74,000 men aged 40 and older who were prescribed tadalafil or similar medications for urinary tract symptoms over a decade.
The findings indicate that men prescribed tadalafil were significantly more likely to develop glaucoma, ocular hypertension, and primary open-angle glaucoma, the most common form of the disease. They also showed a higher likelihood of initiating glaucoma treatment.
Researchers advise that while Cialis use should not be discontinued, patients should consider more frequent eye check-ups. This is particularly important for individuals with pre-existing eye conditions, a family history of glaucoma, or those on long-term therapy. Experts agree that more research is needed to establish a direct causal link, but recommend continued regular eye examinations for at-risk patients.
