Scientists have identified a powerful nutrient, choline, predominantly found in egg yolks, as a significant factor in maintaining brain health and potentially slowing cognitive aging. A recent study published in Aging and Disease revealed a correlation between lower circulating choline levels and accelerated brain aging. This finding emerged from an examination of biomarkers in adults, where individuals with obesity exhibited reduced choline, increased inflammation, and higher levels of neurofilament light, a marker for brain cell damage.
The research further suggests a link between insufficient choline and neurodegeneration, observing low choline levels in the brains of those who died from mild cognitive impairment or Alzheimer's disease. While the study highlights a potential association, experts emphasize that choline is essential for producing acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter critical for memory and mood, and for reducing inflammation.
Experts note that current recommended daily choline intake, around 550 milligrams for men and 450 milligrams for women, is not met by most Americans, who consume only about half. This deficiency, coupled with obesity and insulin resistance, may contribute to cognitive decline. Other rich sources of choline include beef liver, top round beef, and soybeans, offering alternatives for those who do not consume egg yolks.
