China's National Health Commission recently sanctioned seven experts for serious misconduct related to national science program reviews. The Development Center for Medical Science and Technology found these experts failed to withdraw from evaluations despite conflicts of interest. This failure occurred during first-round and project approval reviews for a significant program targeting cancer, cardiovascular, respiratory, and metabolic diseases.
The affected experts, associated with prestigious institutions such as Zunyi Medical University and Peking University People's Hospital, will be ineligible for project and research topic management for three years. Their names have been added to a misconduct registry, with further penalties from other authorities to be enforced. This disciplinary action reflects China's intensified efforts to bolster oversight in scientific research and funding, aiming to uphold research integrity and ensure equitable distribution of public research funds.
