China Urges Cancer Vigilance: Early Detection is Key
7 Mar
Summary
- Early cancer detection is crucial for effective treatment and lower costs.
- Unhealthy habits like smoking and poor diet increase cancer risk.
- Specific screenings advised for lung, colorectal, and gastric cancers.

China's National Health Commission Minister Lei Haichao has stressed the critical importance of cancer prevention and early detection. He stated that cancer, while a significant health concern, becomes manageable and less threatening when identified in its initial stages.
Minister Lei pointed out that many individuals are diagnosed with cancer at advanced stages, which diminishes treatment success rates and escalates healthcare expenses. He identified unhealthy lifestyle choices, including smoking, heavy alcohol consumption, inadequate diet, and lack of physical activity, as key risk factors.
Recommendations were made for specific screenings: annual low-dose CT scans for individuals over 50 with smoking histories or family lung cancer, colonoscopies every three to five years for those at risk of colorectal cancer, and regular gastroscopies for those aged 45 and above with significant alcohol intake or gastric issues. He also noted the hereditary nature of some tumors, urging vigilance for those with a family history.
