China Dispatches Top Doctors to Rural Hospitals
25 Aug
Summary
- Top hospitals will partner with county-level facilities.
- Medical professionals must serve six months on-site.
- Retired doctors can offer flexible teaching and mentorship.

China has introduced a comprehensive five-year action plan aimed at enhancing primary healthcare services for rural residents. This initiative mandates that leading hospitals collaborate with county-level medical facilities.
Each designated supporting hospital is required to assign a minimum of five management or medical professionals to its paired county institution. These professionals must commit to a minimum on-site stay of six consecutive months to ensure continuity of care and knowledge transfer.
To further bolster capacity, the plan supports retired medical practitioners with intermediate or senior professional titles. They can participate on a flexible schedule, providing crucial demonstration-based teaching and mentorship to county-level staff. This aims to improve local capabilities in treating common illnesses, managing emergencies, and controlling infectious diseases.
High-quality medical resources will be channeled to grassroots and remote regions through measures like team-based mentoring, telemedicine consultations, and remote surgical assistance. The program prioritizes disease categories prevalent in the recipient areas, ensuring targeted support.
