Heartbreak as Hospice Shuts Before Holidays

A vital children's hospice, Richard House, which has provided specialized care for 25 years, is scheduled to close on December 18. Located in Newham, east London, the facility supports more than 300 families dealing with complex life-limiting conditions, offering critical services from residential care to end-of-life support.

The decision to close was made by the hospice's board, citing challenges including the cost-of-living crisis, the pandemic, and soaring inflation impacting fundraising. A merger with another hospice was also deemed not possible, leaving families shocked and distressed. Many rely on the hospice as a 'safe place' for their children.

NHS North East London is now collaborating with Haven House Hospice to ensure continued care for affected children and families. Despite government investments in hospice funding, the significant reliance on donations means many such organizations face ongoing financial strain, highlighting the vulnerability of essential children's services.
