Kids Overheat Faster: AIIMS Doctors Issue Urgent Warning
30 Apr
Summary
- Children dehydrate faster and absorb heat more readily than adults.
- One in four children globally faced extreme heat as of 2020.
- Timely intervention is critical for heat exhaustion and heatstroke.

AIIMS doctors have issued an urgent warning regarding the heightened vulnerability of children during heat waves. They explained that children absorb heat more rapidly and dehydrate quicker than adults, necessitating extra vigilance from caregivers.
Experts highlighted that infants, in particular, cannot easily communicate their discomfort from heat or dehydration. Statistics reveal that one in four children worldwide experienced extreme heat exposure in 2020, with nearly 76 percent of children in South Asia being affected. This widespread risk underscores the need for preventative measures.
Recognizing symptoms such as muscle cramps, dizziness, nausea, and weakness is crucial for identifying heat-related illnesses. Health professionals stressed that immediate medical intervention is paramount for heat exhaustion and heatstroke. Failure to act promptly can lead to dangerous consequences, as reduced blood flow due to dehydration can impact vital organs like the brain, liver, and heart.
Dr. Sheffali Gulati emphasized that for elderly individuals or children exhibiting signs of delirium, immediate medical care and cooling therapies are necessary, rather than simply offering rest or fluids. Doctors also advised caregivers to provide children with small, frequent meals and adequate hydration to prevent dehydration.
