Baiga Children Battle Mysterious Illness Wave
21 Sep
Summary
- Over 600 children hospitalized with seasonal illnesses.
- 30 children remain under hospital treatment as of Sept 20.
- Intensified health surveillance and mosquito control implemented.
A significant health concern has emerged in 57 Baiga-dominated villages across Baihar and Birsa blocks of Balaghat district. Hundreds of children have been affected by a wave of illnesses, leading to the hospitalization of 624 children over the past month. These cases primarily involved suspected seasonal illnesses such as fever, malaria, and skin diseases.
As of September 20th, health officials reported that 594 children have recovered and been discharged, but 30 children continue to receive treatment in hospitals. This situation highlights a broader health challenge in the Baiga-dominated belt, where previous child deaths had raised alarms about malnutrition, infections, and healthcare access.
In response, the administration has significantly ramped up its efforts. Door-to-door surveillance has been intensified, with 40,862 people screened and 6,717 identified with various illnesses. Mobile medical units and dedicated health teams are providing home treatment and hospital transport, alongside vitamin supplements and vaccinations. Mosquito-control measures, including insecticide spraying and fogging, are also being actively pursued to combat malaria outbreaks.
