Mum's shock: Young son suffered multiple strokes
2 Aug
Summary
- A mother initially dismissed her son's symptoms as silliness.
- The child experienced multiple transient ischemic attacks, or mini-strokes.
- A children's book was written to help other families cope.

Cat Davies initially mistook her son Henry's odd laughter and wobbly stance for childish antics or pins and needles. Over several weeks in late 2025, Henry, then three, experienced brief episodes of unsteadiness and peculiar laughter. The concerning symptoms escalated when Henry's right side weakened, his mouth drooped, and he struggled to speak, making only grunting noises.
Recognizing stroke signs, Davies immediately called emergency services. Henry was transferred to Southampton Hospital, where extensive tests revealed he had suffered multiple transient ischemic attacks (TIAs), commonly known as mini-strokes, caused by blood clots in his brain. The diagnosis surprised Davies, who had no prior knowledge of children experiencing strokes.
While the exact cause remained unknown, a consultant suggested a chickenpox infection six months prior might have been a trigger, though no virus was detected. Now four, Henry has not had another stroke and shows no current symptoms of brain damage, despite scans indicating eight previous strokes. Davies has since written a children's book, 'Harry's Wibbly Wobbly Moments,' to support other families affected by childhood strokes.
