Urgent Warning: Two Dead in Chicago Meningitis Outbreak

A concerning outbreak of meningitis has led to two deaths in Chicago this month. The Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) has reported a total of seven confirmed cases of Neisseria meningitis among adults since January 17. Health officials are currently engaged in tracing all individuals who may have come into contact with those diagnosed with the infection.

While Chicago typically sees between 10 to 15 meningococcal infections annually, concentrated in winter, this current outbreak has raised significant concern. Symptoms, often mimicking common illnesses like fever and fatigue, can worsen rapidly. CDPH advises seeking immediate medical attention for severe symptoms such as stiff neck, light sensitivity, or a distinctive rash.

The infection spreads through direct saliva contact, typically requiring close and prolonged exposure like living together or kissing. To combat the spread, the state of Illinois strongly recommends the MenACWY vaccination for all individuals at ages 11 or 12, with a booster dose advised at age 16.
