Cherries Fight Aggressive Breast Cancer

Summary
- Dark cherries contain compounds that may slow aggressive breast cancer.
- Anthocyanins in cherries reduced tumor growth in mice.
- Research shows potential for new treatments against triple-negative cancer.

Compounds found in dark sweet cherries show promise in slowing the growth of aggressive triple-negative breast cancer, according to recent research. These findings, focusing on anthocyanins—natural pigments responsible for the fruit's dark hue—were observed in studies involving mice.
Researchers at Texas A&M University found that anthocyanin treatment helped to reduce tumor growth and the spread of cancer to other organs in mice. This is particularly significant as triple-negative breast cancer is known for its limited treatment options and high risk of metastasis.
The study divided mice into groups, with some receiving cherry extract, a chemotherapy drug, both, or no treatment. Those treated with cherry extract before tumor implantation exhibited slower tumor growth without side effects and maintained weight.
While the results are encouraging, scientists emphasize that more research is necessary to ascertain if these effects translate to human patients. Cherries are also known for other health benefits, including reducing inflammation and improving sleep.
