A pioneering government-run end-of-life care center has been inaugurated in Tambaram, Chennai, offering specialized services for patients with advanced cancer and chronic diseases. This 180-bed hospice, repurposed from a former Covid-19 isolation ward, was officially opened on Wednesday.
The facility, affiliated with Madras Medical College, is designed to provide comprehensive care focused on comfort and dignity for patients in their final weeks or months. Services include pain management, symptom control, and crucial psychosocial support.
Officials estimate the hospice will cater to up to 400 terminally ill patients annually. It features a 16-bed ICU, 134 general ward beds, and 30 paid wards. The state has allocated an annual budget of 7.44 crore for its maintenance and staffing, ensuring a dedicated team of doctors, nurses, social workers, and psychologists.
