Chennai Hospital Opens Cystic Fibrosis Clinic for Kids

Kanchi Kamakoti CHILDS Trust Hospital in Chennai has launched a dedicated multi-disciplinary clinic for cystic fibrosis, aiming to provide a single hub for diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing management of the condition in children. This initiative seeks to alleviate the difficulties families face in diagnosing and managing this genetic disorder.

Cystic fibrosis, which affects an estimated 1 in 10,000 live births in India, causes thick mucus buildup that impacts multiple organs. Symptoms can vary, leading to delayed diagnosis. The new clinic will consolidate essential services, including paediatric pulmonology, endocrinology, gastrointestinal, nutritional, and psychological care.

Furthermore, the hospital is enhancing its interventional pulmonology services with advanced techniques like endobronchial ultrasounds and bronchoscopic cryotherapy. These interventions are designed to help children avoid invasive surgeries and promote faster recovery times. The clinic will operate monthly, and a continuing medical education program is planned to foster awareness and early diagnosis among specialists.
