Central Asia is experiencing a concerning boom in cosmetic surgery, with social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok heavily influencing potential patients. However, this trend is marred by an increasing number of failed and even fatal procedures. Diana Tergenbayeva's experience of severe swelling and an open wound after a breast lift highlights the risks. Many cases involve unqualified practitioners working illegally, sometimes using expired medications. The Kyrgyz health ministry acknowledges the problem, with over 1,300 companies illegally operating in medical fields. Inspections have led to some closures, but the issue persists. Plastic surgeons warn that beauticians often overstep their bounds, performing surgical procedures in unsuitable settings. Jasmine Karipayeva and Oksana Tikhaya are other victims who suffered disfigurement and ongoing discomfort after eyelid surgery and eyelid lifts, respectively, lured by low prices and appealing online images. Victims collectively urge others to thoroughly research and consider the significant risks before undergoing cosmetic surgery.
