- Over a third of North East care homes lacked inspections since 2021.
- More than 5,400 UK care homes have not been fully investigated since 2021.
- CQC acknowledges need to increase assessment rates for public confidence.

A substantial backlog of inspections has left over a third of North East care homes without assessment from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) since 2021. Data reveals that 242 out of 688 care homes in the region have not been inspected. This situation mirrors a national trend, with more than 5,400 care homes across the UK also missing full investigations since 2021.
Independent inspection firm CIUK described the backlog as a serious concern, emphasizing the necessity of regular oversight and accountability. While acknowledging the need to boost assessment rates, the CQC stated it responds promptly to intelligence received from relatives, whistleblowers, and councils. Chief Inspector Chris Badger affirmed the CQC's commitment to increasing assessments to provide public confidence in care quality, noting progress towards agreed targets with the Department of Health and Social Care.
