Young Care Assistant Dies After Surgery Complications
18 Feb
Summary
- Elyse Foster, 22, died after cardiac arrest and brain injury.
- Her death was attributed to natural causes following surgery.
- Family expressed feeling let down by hospital care.

A young care assistant, Elyse Foster, aged 22, passed away from natural causes, an inquest has determined. The inquest heard that Foster, from Cheddleton, Staffordshire, had been diagnosed with myasthenia gravis, a condition causing muscle weakness. This was followed by a diagnosis of thymoma cancer, which had spread to her lungs.
Surgery to remove the tumor was performed at Royal Stoke Hospital on September 22, 2024. Following the procedure, her condition did not stabilize, and she suffered a cardiac arrest on October 7, 2024. Life support was withdrawn on October 17, 2024.
Coroner's court concluded her death was of natural causes, contributed to by the necessary surgery. However, Foster's family stated they felt the Royal Stoke Hospital had let their daughter down. They are reportedly considering legal action against the hospital trust.
