Summary
- Cardiac Wellness program marks 25 years of vital post-event recovery.
- Program operates across three locations, serving hundreds weekly.
- It aids patients aged 20 to 95 in preventing future cardiac events.

For 25 years, Hotel-Dieu Grace Healthcare's Cardiac Wellness Care program has been instrumental in helping individuals across the region recover from cardiac events. Established in June 2001, the program now extends its reach from three convenient locations: the Tayfour Campus in Windsor, the Leamington Nature Fresh Farms Recreation Complex, and the Bob Probert Tecumseh Campus.
Led by Medical Director Dr. Martin McFarlane, the program offers a holistic approach to cardiac rehabilitation and prevention. This includes expert medical guidance, essential education, tailored exercise regimens, and continuous support. Dr. McFarlane stresses the importance of risk factor modification, encouraging a heart-healthy diet and regular exercise for everyone, not just those recovering from an event.
The program serves an average of over 400 patients weekly, spanning a wide age range from 20 to 95 years. Its impact is profound, particularly as cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death in Canada. Since 2013 alone, the program has provided care to 7,161 unique patients, facilitating 83,233 patient visits.
Sonya Vani, a survivor who completed the program, shared her positive experience. Initially unsure if she could return to her active lifestyle after a 2006 cardiac event at age 37, Vani found the education sessions and supervised exercise crucial. The program empowered her to regain her passion for long-distance running and maintain social connections through shared activities.
