Revolutionary CAR-T Therapy Offers Kidney Transplant Chance
4 Jun
Summary
- CAR-T therapy, once for cancer, now helps kidney failure patients.
- Harmful antibodies preventing transplants were removed using CAR-T.
- A clinical trial at Penn Medicine shows promising results for patients.

Revolutionary CAR-T therapy, initially a breakthrough in cancer treatment, is now being explored to assist patients with kidney failure. Researchers at Penn Medicine are conducting a clinical trial to assess its efficacy in this new application.
Andrew Boyd, 48, a patient who had suffered from kidney failure for decades, shared his positive experience. Harmful antibodies in his blood previously prevented him from receiving a kidney transplant. This barrier was overcome through CAR-T cell therapy, which reprograms immune cells.
Dr. Ali Naji of Penn Medicine highlighted CAR-T as a significant medical advancement, harnessing the immune system's power. The therapy successfully removed Boyd's antibodies, clearing him for a transplant. He is now enjoying improved quality of life with his family.
The ongoing, small-scale clinical trial aims to treat at least 10 patients. So far, the two transplant patients involved are reportedly doing well. This trial represents a significant step towards potentially expanding CAR-T therapy's use for kidney failure patients.
