Summary
- Overnight detox beds are available again at Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
- The service was paused last summer, but reopened on June 15.
- Physicians from across the province now form an on-call list for support.
Overnight detox beds are once again available at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, with the inpatient withdrawal management service having fully reopened on June 15. This service was paused last summer by Nova Scotia Health while they sought additional physicians to provide specialized addiction treatment.
Dr. David Martell, the province's medical lead on addictions, confirmed that an on-call list of physicians from across Nova Scotia has been established to offer 24/7 support. Two new doctors have also been hired at the regional hospital in Sydney. These physicians offer a range of services, including outpatient care and the overnight detox unit, to address the needs of individuals with addictive disorders.
Martell expressed satisfaction that all patients can now receive necessary care, highlighting the commitment to achieving greater equity in addiction service availability across the province. He noted that while recruiting doctors took longer than anticipated, there are future plans to train nurse practitioners and doctors to expand withdrawal management services to other settings like doctors' offices.
