Grace Lombardo is preparing for her first marathon, a significant personal challenge following two battles with cancer. She will be running to raise funds for the Lynn Sage Breast Cancer Foundation. This endeavor represents a triumph over adversity for Lombardo, who was first diagnosed with Stage IIA invasive ductal carcinoma at age 36.
Her initial diagnosis came when her children were very young, prompting her to face the disease with a blend of humor and realism for them. Five years after winning her first fight, cancer returned. This time, Lombardo underwent further surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiation treatments.
Now, free from cancer, Lombardo channels her strength into training for the 26.2-mile Bank of America Chicago Marathon. She runs not only to honor her own survival but also to support advancements in medical research, acknowledging the progress made over the past decade. She also runs to honor her father, who died from esophageal cancer in 2013.
