Cancer Patient Fury Over Doctor Strike Cancellation
7 Apr
Summary
- Cancer patient's vital hospital appointment was postponed.
- Doctors' strike caused a six-day disruption to NHS services.
- The patient fears his condition could worsen due to the delay.

A cancer patient has voiced extreme frustration after a six-day doctors' strike led to the cancellation of a critical hospital appointment. Stuart Sims, a 60-year-old from Derbyshire diagnosed with neuroendocrine cancer, was scheduled for a cardiology appointment at Nottingham City Hospital to investigate a heart valve issue identified in November. This appointment has now been rescheduled for next month.
The British Medical Association (BMA) apologized for the disruption, citing insufficient government action on pay claims and concerns about job shortages. They stated that resident doctors' pay has declined by 20% in real terms since 2008. The strike, which began on Tuesday and concluded on Monday, marks the 15th instance of industrial action since March 2023.
Health Secretary Wes Streeting characterized the BMA's demands as unreasonable. The Department for Health and Social Care spokesperson countered that doctors were offered a generous package, including a 3.5% pay rise recommended by an independent pay review body. Last Thursday, the government withdrew an offer for 1,000 additional training posts in England after the BMA refused to halt the strike.
Sims, whose cancer has spread to his spine and liver, worries the delay could be life-threatening. His wife, Karen, an NHS administrator, sympathizes with the doctors but questions the ethics of strikes that affect vulnerable patients. A spokesperson for Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust confirmed Mr. Sims's appointment has been rescheduled and prioritized patient safety during industrial action.
