A parasitic outbreak connected to the Butterfield Acres petting farm in Calgary has expanded to 17 confirmed cases of cryptosporidium. All individuals diagnosed with the illness are 17 years of age or older. The farm, which had previously closed voluntarily, has now shut its doors again. This decision was made to prioritize safety and remains in effect until the public health alert is rescinded. Provincial health officials are actively communicating with Butterfield Acres, offering assistance and confirming the closure is voluntary.
The parasite, cryptosporidium, can cause symptoms including watery diarrhea, fever, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain, typically lasting up to two weeks. Transmission occurs through contact with infected feces. While most individuals recover without medical intervention, those with compromised immune systems face a higher risk of complications. The infected calf, suspected as the source, was euthanized, with its twin kept in isolation. No hospitalizations or fatalities have been recorded in connection with this outbreak.
