As of November 15th, 2025, health experts are warning people about the dangers of excessive caffeine consumption. According to the advice from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), the recommended daily limit for healthy adults is 400mg of caffeine, which is equivalent to around four or five cups of tea or coffee. For pregnant women, the limit is even lower at 200mg per day.
Dr. Tim Mercer, a practicing GP, explains that a regular cup of coffee contains around 100mg of caffeine, while a cup of tea has between 50-80mg. However, certain energy drinks can range from 80mg to 160mg, putting people at risk of "caffeine toxicity." This can lead to a range of harmful symptoms, including a racing heart, increased anxiety, and poor decision-making. Physically, overconsumption of caffeine can also trigger issues like acid reflux, heartburn, and an increased urge to use the restroom.
Dr. Mercer cautions that caffeine can be dependency-forming, with many people developing a need for multiple cups throughout the day. This can disrupt sleep patterns and create a vicious cycle of reliance on the stimulant. To break the habit, the expert suggests trying caffeine-free alternatives, such as decaf versions of popular tea and coffee brands.
