Formula Recall Sparks Botulism Surge
21 Nov
Summary
- Infant botulism cases tied to ByHeart formula recall nearly tripled.
- 31 hospitalizations reported across 15 states, with no deaths.
- Recall affects all batches of ByHeart Whole Nutrition Infant Formula.

A nationwide recall of ByHeart Whole Nutrition infant formula has been linked to a significant rise in infant botulism cases. Since the initial recall announcement on November 8, cases have nearly tripled, reaching 31 hospitalizations across 15 states. Initially, 13 cases were reported in 10 states.
ByHeart has expanded its recall to encompass all batches of its Whole Nutrition Infant Formula in cans and its "Anywhere Pack" sticks. Parents and caregivers are strongly advised to immediately discontinue use of the formula and monitor their infants for symptoms such as constipation, poor feeding, loss of head control, and difficulty breathing. Prompt medical attention is crucial if these symptoms appear.
While no deaths have been reported, all 31 affected infants required hospitalization. The illness onset dates range from August 9 to November 13. The recalled formula was sold nationwide, both online and in major retail stores. Parents who purchased the formula are advised to stop using it, return unopened products, and clean any surfaces that may have contacted the product.
