Burn Fat Daily with Cold Exposure: Science Says Yes
15 May
Summary
- Daily cold exposure activates brown fat to burn calories for heat.
- Cooling vests helped participants lose fat mass in a six-week study.
- Researchers are testing cold showers for weight loss benefits.

Scientists have found that daily cold exposure may be a key to burning fat and aiding weight loss. Research indicates that activating brown fat, which uses stored body fat to generate heat, is a primary mechanism. This specialized tissue burns energy rather than storing it, playing a crucial role in metabolism.
A recent study presented at the European Congress of Obesity involved participants wearing an ice vest for two hours each morning. Over six weeks, those using the vest lost an average of 0.9kg (2lb) of body fat. In contrast, the control group not wearing the vest gained an average of 0.6kg (1.3lb).
Researchers are now conducting a new trial to determine if standing under a cold shower for 90 seconds daily can achieve similar fat-reducing effects. This method is being tested on 34 women, with participants encouraged to gradually adapt to the cold at the end of their showers.
This line of research is jointly funded by the British Heart Foundation and the Dutch Heart Foundation. Beyond weight management, cold exposure is being investigated for its potential to reduce inflammation and help prevent heart disease, offering a holistic approach to health.
