Budget 2026: Cancer Care Costs Reduced

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has announced a significant relief measure for cancer patients by exempting basic customs duty on 17 life-saving cancer drugs. This move is expected to substantially lower treatment costs for many individuals relying on imported therapies.

In addition to the drug duty exemptions, seven rare diseases have been included for import duty exemption for personal medical use. This expansion of coverage addresses critical needs for patients with less common conditions.

The Budget 2026-27 also prioritizes the healthcare infrastructure by supporting the establishment of five medical hubs, aiming to significantly boost medical tourism in India. Furthermore, the initiative to create 1.5 lakh multiskilled caregivers will enhance geriatric care and provide much-needed support services, generating employment opportunities across various healthcare roles.

However, concerns have been raised regarding the neglect of primary healthcare and public health infrastructure in the budget. Critics argue that while measures like medical tourism promotion benefit corporate hospitals, they do not directly aid the common populace. The lack of incentives for domestic manufacturing of medical devices under the 'Make in India' initiative has also been highlighted as a missed opportunity.
