Man Dies After Falling From Motorway Bridge
24 Mar
Summary
- Man fell from M32 motorway bridge in Bristol.
- He was on unescorted leave from Priory Hospital.
- An inquest into his death is currently ongoing.

Theo Schooling, a 40-year-old father of two, died after falling from a motorway bridge in Bristol on January 16, 2025. He had been a patient at the nearby Priory Hospital, a psychiatric intensive care unit (PICU), since November 2024. Schooling, who suffered from bipolar disorder, was described by his family as a kind and intelligent man.
His mental health deteriorated after an injury prevented him from exercising. Following a manic episode in November 2024, he was detained under the Mental Health Act and transferred 160 miles from his London home to the Bristol hospital. While at the Priory, he was flagged as a suicide risk but was later moved to a less severe ward.
On the day of his death, Schooling's parents visited him, noting he seemed unwell and restless. Despite his mother's concerns expressed to the hospital, he was granted unaccompanied grounds leave that evening. He subsequently left the hospital grounds and fell to his death from the M32 motorway bridge. An inquest into the circumstances of his death is ongoing at Avon Coroner's Court.
