Mumbai Study: 82.5% of Breast Lumps Were Cancerous
30 Oct
Summary
- A Mumbai study found 82.5% of breast concerns were cancerous.
- Cancer patients ranged from 23 to 98 years old.
- Mastectomy was the most common surgical procedure performed.

A significant majority of breast concerns evaluated at the Head & Neck Cancer Institute of India (HNCII) in Mumbai were found to be cancerous. Over a three-year period, a review of 578 patients indicated that 82.5% of cases presented with malignant conditions, while 17.5% were non-cancerous, as confirmed by tissue examination.
The age range for patients diagnosed with breast cancer was broad, spanning from 23 to 98 years, with an average age of 52.7 years. Tumour sizes varied, with a notable percentage of tumors measuring over 5 cm. Furthermore, over half of the patients reported more than four lymph nodes positive for cancer, a critical factor in assessing the disease's extent.
Mastectomy, a procedure involving the removal of the breast, was identified as the most common surgery performed for these patients. The findings underscore the importance of seeking medical evaluation for any unusual breast changes, as prompt assessment can lead to timely diagnosis and appropriate care, even if not all lumps are cancerous.
