The Healing Connections program at Misericordia Community Hospital has cultivated a strong legacy, with past participants now stepping up as volunteers. This initiative offers dedicated support to patients recovering from surgery, guided by a nurse consultant who assists with treatment navigation and provides emotional comfort.
Participants benefit from connections to community resources, including virtual educational sessions and an in-person peer support group led by survivor volunteers. Vasudha Tiwari shared that the program provided much-needed clarity amidst overwhelming online advice regarding her estrogen-positive cancer diagnosis after surgery in December 2023.
Registered nurse Jessica Cortes notes that several program attendees have transitioned into volunteer roles, sharing their experiences to foster a supportive environment. This community offers valuable information on future treatments and essential emotional solace, particularly when patients are initially inundated with medical details.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In Canada, breast cancer remains the most common cancer among women. Statistically, 89 women in Canada are diagnosed with breast cancer daily, and 15 succumb to the disease each day. An estimated 300 men in Canada will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2026, with 60 expected to die from it.
