Yoga Pain Leads to Breast Cancer Diagnosis, Double Mastectomy

In December 2021, a sharp pain during yoga prompted Vicki Poole to seek medical attention. By February 2022, she received a lobular breast cancer diagnosis. Initial scans uncovered a significant tumor measuring 10cm by 4cm by 6cm, alongside concerning lymph nodes. Fortunately, the cancer had not spread to other parts of her body at that time.
Vicki underwent a mastectomy of her right breast in April 2022, followed by chemotherapy. This treatment unfortunately triggered a heart arrhythmia, requiring hospitalization. Subsequent treatments included radiotherapy and hormone therapy. By July 2024, she experienced bleeding from her left nipple and discovered abnormal skin patches, leading to the decision for a mastectomy on her left breast.
Reflecting on her experience, Vicki emphasizes the importance of seeking medical advice for any breast concerns. Breast Cancer Now has launched a five-year research initiative dedicated to improving treatments for lobular breast cancer, committing £1 million in its first year to research at its Toby Robins Research Centre.
