Health authorities in Brazil confirmed on Monday that a second patient, who had arrived from an African country with viral symptoms, tested negative for Ebola. This individual, a 37-year-old man who had traveled to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), was placed in isolation.
Sao Paulo health officials stated that Ebola was ruled out for this patient, who was instead diagnosed with meningitis. Separately, a man isolated in Rio de Janeiro after visiting Uganda was diagnosed with malaria, with his Ebola tests also returning negative.
The Brazilian health ministry emphasized that the risk of the disease entering Brazil and South America is very low. The ongoing Ebola outbreak in the DRC, declared on May 15, has led to over 1,000 suspected cases and nearly 250 deaths, with several infections and one death confirmed in neighboring Uganda.
