Community Rallies for Brave Officer Facing Cancer Fight

Senior Constable Mark Patterson, a respected police officer in Tumut, is currently battling his second cancer diagnosis. Following a previous bowel tumor removal, Patterson was diagnosed this year with pancreatic cancer. He has undergone an intense chemotherapy regime and is now receiving immunotherapy. Part of his pancreas and his spleen have been surgically removed.

Pancreatic cancer is the third-deadliest cancer in Australia, with a five-year survival rate of only 14 percent. Researchers are working to improve treatment responses and patient survival rates for this often-silent disease. Patterson, who previously served in highway patrol, has returned to work on limited desk duties.

To support Patterson, colleagues and friends organized a 12-hour relay swim at the Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre in Ultimo to raise funds for his medical expenses. His commitment to his work and positive outlook remain strong despite his health challenges, as he is determined to win his fight.
