Summary
- A new mobile harm reduction van will operate in Brandon, Manitoba.
- The service aims to reach individuals who cannot access fixed-site support.
- Health Canada has provided funding for the pilot project.
A mobile harm reduction outreach service is being launched in Brandon, Manitoba, to address the ongoing crisis of preventable deaths caused by toxic drugs. Operated by the Southern Chiefs' Organization (SCO), this initiative will bring essential life-saving support directly to the streets of the province's second-largest city. The van will actively seek out individuals in encampments, back lanes, and other hard-to-reach areas, aiming to connect with those who may be disconnected from existing services.
The pilot project, which received $435,540 in funding from Health Canada, is scheduled to begin operations early in the new year. This development is seen as a crucial step forward by local non-profits and substance users who emphasize the urgent need for low-barrier access to support. The mobile nature of the service is expected to significantly improve accessibility, especially for individuals facing challenges in reaching fixed-site locations.
The SCO, which already manages a mobile crisis team across 32 First Nations, brings extensive experience in outreach and crisis intervention. This new service in Brandon extends their expertise to an urban setting, addressing interconnected issues of addiction, mental health, and housing insecurity. The project aims to reduce overdose fatalities, support vulnerable populations, and foster community well-being, with hopes that successful outcomes will secure sustained funding.
