In a landmark event for the Ramanathapuram Government Medical College Hospital, the organs of a brain-dead young woman were harvested for donation on August 30, 2025. The victim, 27-year-old Sandhya, was from Peraiyur Kollankulam near Kamuthi in Ramanathapuram district.
On August 28, Sandhya was making her way to Kamuthi on foot when a relative offered her a ride on a two-wheeler. Tragically, she fell off the vehicle near the Peraiyur bus stand and sustained severe injuries. Sandhya was rushed to the Kamuthi Government Hospital for first aid and then transferred to the intensive care unit at the Ramanathapuram Government Medical College Hospital.
After thorough medical examinations, doctors determined that Sandhya had suffered a brain hemorrhage and was brain-dead. Fortunately, her family was willing to donate her organs, and the hospital proceeded to harvest her eyes, kidneys, heart, and liver. These vital organs were then transported to Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai and a private hospital for transplantation, potentially saving the lives of multiple patients in need.
