Brain Stays Active for an Hour After Death
13 Feb
Summary
- Brain activity can persist for up to an hour after the heart stops.
- Survivors reported dream-like experiences and awareness during death.
- Findings may improve patient care and organ donation practices.

A top critical care doctor has revealed that the human brain remains active for up to an hour after the heart stops beating, a period often considered clinical death. Dr. Sam Parnia's research, involving over 567 patients in 25 hospitals, found significant brain wave activity, including gamma, alpha, and beta waves associated with thinking and awareness, persisting for 35 to 60 minutes post-cardiac arrest.
Survivors of these experiences reported clear, dream-like consciousness, feeling detached from their bodies and observing events in their rooms with remarkable accuracy. This heightened brain activity is believed to be a hyper-alert state triggered as brain cells lose oxygen. This crucial understanding may lead to advancements in preventing brain injuries during cardiac arrest and inform organ donation protocols.
Dr. Parnia's study, AWARE-II, monitored patients with EEGs during CPR and interviewed survivors. The observations challenge long-held beliefs about permanent brain damage occurring within minutes of oxygen deprivation. This revelation opens new avenues for patient care, potentially leading to better techniques for restarting the heart and protecting the brain during resuscitation efforts.
