A six-year-old boy from Badin tragically died of rabies on October 24th at Liaquat University Hospital (LUH) City branch. This marks the 43rd rabies death in Sindh this year. The boy had been bitten by a dog on September 29th and reportedly received both rabies immunoglobulin (RIG) and anti-rabies vaccine (ARV) at a facility in Golarchi.
Despite receiving post-exposure treatment, the child presented with severe symptoms including hydrophobia and irritability. Tragically, resuscitation efforts at LUH were unsuccessful, and he passed away. In response to this and other similar deaths, the Sindh Chief Secretary has ordered the suspension of four doctors.
Explanations have also been requested from the heads of seven health facilities. A tracking system is now monitoring all rabies deaths to identify systemic failures. The incidents highlight critical concerns regarding vaccine quality, specifically cold-chain efficacy, and the adequacy of staff training for post-exposure rabies management.
