1 Jun
Summary
- A woman detected stage one bowel cancer without any symptoms.
- The simple NHS bowel cancer screening test led to her diagnosis.
- Experts urge people to complete the free screening kit upon arrival.

A simple NHS bowel cancer screening test has been credited with saving the life of Grace Stearn, a 54-year-old woman from Truro who initially believed she was in perfect health. Stearn reported having no symptoms when the screening kit arrived at her home. However, a positive result from the test prompted further investigations, which confirmed stage one bowel cancer.
Stearn underwent significant surgery, stating that the "process saved my life." She recalled sending off the kit with little expectation of any issues. A subsequent colonoscopy revealed concerning polyps, and a follow-up confirmed the early-stage cancer in her rectum. She expressed shock at the diagnosis due to the complete absence of symptoms, describing the experience as "out of the blue" and a "tough journey" that affected her family.
In another case, Rose Millard from Torquay received peace of mind after completing a test offered by her GP. Her results came back clear, reassuring her despite feeling run down. Lisa Rees from Bowel Cancer UK highlighted that roughly a quarter of people do not complete the free bowel screening tests. Bowel Cancer UK advises completing the test immediately, being aware of symptoms like blood in stool or unexplained tiredness, and consulting a doctor about any changes, regardless of recent screening. They also promote risk reduction through diet, activity, and limiting alcohol and smoking.
