Move More, Live Longer: New Study Reveals Simple Path
18 Apr
Summary
- Regular activity halves premature death risk in women.
- Starting exercise in midlife improves quality of life.
- Any movement, even light, boosts health and longevity.

New research suggests that embracing physical activity, even starting in midlife, can significantly boost longevity and enhance quality of life. Studies involving thousands of women aged 47 to 52 indicated that consistent adherence to World Health Organization physical activity guidelines was associated with about half the risk of premature death compared to inactive individuals.
Even for women experiencing perimenopause and menopause, when physical changes can make exercise more challenging, starting to move offers substantial benefits. Research also indicates that incorporating light-intensity physical activity, such as a slow walk or stretching, can reduce the risk of death, particularly for those with lower levels of moderate-to-vigorous activity.
Dr. Binh Nguyen, a lead researcher, emphasizes that any form of movement contributes to better physical and mental health, social connections, and can counteract age-related changes like bone loss and increased risk of diseases. The studies found that the benefits of exercise are cumulative, with greater activity leading to better results, but even small amounts of movement yield positive health impacts.
