Study Confirms Blue Zones Hold Secrets to Long Life
16 Jan
Summary
- Four regions show unusually high survival rates into old age.
- Okinawa and Nicoya are reportedly losing their 'blue zone' status.
- Isolation may be a key factor in the longevity of these zones.

A comprehensive scientific study has validated the existence and significance of 'blue zones,' areas globally recognized for the exceptional longevity and health of their residents. The research, published in The Gerontologist, focused on regions with a high concentration of individuals living to at least 90 years old over the past 150 years, rigorously verifying birth and death records. This validation confirmed that specific areas like Sardinia, Okinawa, Ikaria, and Nicoya indeed exhibit unusually high survival rates well into advanced age, offering valuable insights into healthy aging.
While the findings underscore the enduring health benefits associated with these unique regions, the study also highlights a concerning trend: two of the four classic blue zones, Okinawa and Nicoya, are showing signs of decline. Modernization, including westernization and changes in lifestyle, appears to be eroding the exceptional longevity previously observed. This shift suggests that the factors contributing to blue zones are not immutable and can be affected by contemporary influences and changing living conditions.
