Bird Flu Outbreak: 4,400 Chickens Dead in Bilaspur
24 Mar
Summary
- Over 4,400 chickens died from viral infection at a government farm.
- Avian influenza confirmed by lab; containment measures enacted.
- Infected zone declared; culling, disposal, and sanitization underway.

A significant viral infection has resulted in the deaths of around 4,400 chickens at the government poultry farm in Bilaspur between March 19 and March 24. The total population at the facility was 5,037 chickens. Subsequent testing of samples confirmed the presence of avian influenza.
District Collector Sanjay Agrawal has initiated containment protocols under the Revised Action Plan for Prevention and Containment of Avian Influenza. A one-kilometer radius surrounding the farm has been designated an 'infected zone,' with a ten-kilometer radius established as a 'surveillance zone.' Within the infected zone, all poultry, eggs, and feed will be destroyed, and their movement completely prohibited, with compensation provided to affected owners.
Rapid Response Teams are actively engaged in culling infected birds, safe disposal of materials, and sanitization efforts. Warning signboards will be erected, and strict monitoring will be enforced on poultry sales and movement within these zones. The health of farm workers is also being monitored, with testing and antiviral medication available for those showing symptoms. Officials urge the public to disregard rumors and cooperate with authorities, emphasizing that no human infections have been reported to date.
