30 Mar
Summary
- Bipolar disorder involves extreme mood fluctuations: mania and depression.
- Mania includes elevated mood, excessive activity, and irritability.
- Depression is marked by sadness and loss of interest in activities.

An awareness program focused on bipolar disorder was recently conducted at Indur Neuro Psychiatric Hospital in Nizamabad to commemorate World Bipolar Day. The event was a collaborative effort by the Indian Medical Association (IMA), Nizamabad branch, and the IMA Telangana Mental Health Committee.
Dr. Vishal Akula, president of IMA Nizamabad, addressed attendees, defining bipolar disorder as a significant mental illness characterized by extreme shifts in mood. He explained that the term 'bipolar' signifies two distinct mental states: mania, marked by an elevated mood and heightened activity, and depression, which involves persistent feelings of sadness and a diminished interest in usual activities.
