Bill Gates: Measles Eradication Off Table Due to Vaccine Hesitancy

Vaccine hesitancy in affluent countries has made it impossible to achieve the goal of eradicating measles globally, according to philanthropist Bill Gates. He expressed that this objective, once a focus for his foundation, is now off the table.

Measles, a highly contagious childhood disease, caused about 2 million deaths annually before the 1960s vaccine. While modern vaccines have reduced this to around 100,000 deaths yearly, mainly in conflict-affected regions, outbreaks are resurging in previously unaffected areas like the United States and Europe as vaccination rates decline.

Gates noted that vaccine hesitancy has not yet significantly spread to lower-income countries where his foundation operates, though he acknowledged the potential risk. He also addressed the impact of aid cuts from countries like the U.S., UK, and Germany, warning they likely caused many deaths, though restoration of some funding and efforts by other groups prevented the worst-case scenarios.

Speaking ahead of his foundation's Goalkeepers event, Gates urged governments to maintain or increase aid, emphasizing that the global health situation remains tragic despite averted disasters. He highlighted the ongoing importance of progress towards the United Nations' 2030 development goals for health.
