Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) is establishing an independent Spine Sub-Speciality Unit under its orthopaedics department. This specialized unit is designed to offer advanced treatment for patients suffering from complex spinal disorders and complicated spine surgeries. The health department officially announced the creation of this unit on a Thursday, following state cabinet approval in May for 39 new posts at PMCH.
Dr. Mahesh Prasad, associate professor of orthopaedics, has been appointed as the in-charge of the new unit. He stated that this facility will be the first of its kind in Bihar, significantly benefiting those with various spine-related problems. The unit requires a separate operation theatre, equipment, and tools, with an expected inauguration this month.
The dedicated unit will allow PMCH to manage complex spinal cases with a specialized team, improving upon current routine orthopaedic services. This focus is anticipated to foster specialized expertise and infrastructure for spine-related procedures within the hospital. In parallel, the health department also initiated a special campaign on Friday for surgical treatment of children with cleft lip, cleft palate, and tongue-tie under the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) at 12 medical institutions across Bihar, starting at PMCH.
