Bihar Boosts Maternal Care: Essential Equipment Deployed
4 Aug
Summary
- Hospitals in Bihar are to assess and procure missing surgical equipment.
- The initiative aims to improve maternal and newborn healthcare services.
- Better equipment will reduce maternal and neonatal mortality rates.
Bihar's health department has mandated a comprehensive assessment of equipment in obstetrics, gynaecology operation theatres, and Labour, Delivery, and Recovery (LDR) complexes across all district hospitals and government health facilities. This directive, issued by the State Health Society, requires civil surgeons and hospital administrations to evaluate their current equipment against Indian Public Health Standards (IPHS) and identify any shortages.
Hospitals must submit requisitions for missing equipment through the Bihar Medical Services and Infrastructure Corporation Limited's EMMS-e-Upkaran portal. Essential items include operation tables, anaesthesia workstations, suction machines, autoclaves, ECG machines, and foetal dopplers. This upgrade is intended to significantly improve the quality of delivery services, promote safe motherhood, and reduce maternal and neonatal mortality rates.
Health Minister Nishant Kumar stated that better-equipped facilities will strengthen obstetric and gynaecological services, thereby minimizing the necessity for patient referrals to higher medical centers. The department anticipates this procurement will ensure pregnant women receive safer and higher-quality maternity care throughout the state.
