BIGGER Issue Tackles Homelessness & Vision Care
10 Aug
Summary
- One in three homeless individuals face sight issues.
- BIGGER Issue magazine aims to highlight vision and hearing barriers.
- Specsavers' expanded service offers free eye and hearing care.

The latest edition of Big Issue has been released in an oversized format to draw attention to barriers preventing people experiencing homelessness from accessing essential eye and hearing care. Research indicates that one in three individuals facing homelessness have a sight condition, with many not having had an eye test in five years or more.
This special edition, named the BIGGER Issue, is a collaboration with Specsavers. It aims to make the challenges of accessing care impossible to ignore. The initiative promotes the nationwide expansion of Specsavers' Charity VIP Service, which provides free eye and hearing examinations and support to anyone experiencing homelessness in the UK and Ireland. Since its launch in November 2022, the program has been instrumental in identifying significant needs, with a high proportion of recipients requiring glasses or referrals to medical professionals.
Beyond vision, the service also addresses hearing health. Research shows a high percentage of people experiencing homelessness report ear pain or discomfort and sounds indicative of hearing loss. However, many face obstacles like digital booking systems and long waiting lists when seeking audiology support. Vendors like Jack Osborne-Richardson have shared how crucial free and accessible eye care has been for their safety and confidence. The initiative has already assisted over 7,000 individuals in receiving free eye and hearing care.
